Here is the best collection of known XD-1's that are out of production I could assemble. If you have more info please add on! The Timeslip 55" Discoverywww.starshipmodeler.com/2001/disc_akmm.htmThere was a rumor in early 2009 that this was being remastered for an improved second edition. The Comet 12" Discoverywww.starshipmodeler.com/other/ps_pred.htmwww.starshipmodeler.org/gallery8/ms_discovery.htmIt's theorized that a recast of the Comet is again being recast on ebay as of 2010. The 4th Axis 2001 Christmas Ornamentswww.starshipmodeler.com/2001/ms_2001.htmThe 4th Axis released the 2001 kits in the year 2003 and wasn't long in business. Those models were produced in very small numbers. The Lunar Models 30" DiscoveryLM seems to be out of business for some time now. The XD-1's they made were of variable quality from most excellent to worthless trash. The MiniModelMadness 12" DiscoveryIt has been demonstrated on other forums this is a recast of a recast.

While some folks raved about the Lunar Model's Discovery, here's a few pix of the one I acquired. Captain Cardboard was going to toss this and, sight unseen, I thought I could salvage it so gave him a call. I wound up passing it along to Tagdot and have not heard of it since... Here's some pix I took. -------------------------------------------- Here are a few other pix of the kit... First, size reference: index finger tip... Some crud and a gaping wound... Off axis, non-symmetrical and holey. Flash flash flash. Cooking with gas. Tiny, tiny pieces. Dozens of them. The best part of the ship. Crisp details all over, excellent casting. The main details are over here: www.twinlitworlds.com/modelwerx/Click the Kits link at top left and this one is #62 on the list.

Just finished re-reading Mike Dentzer's excellent SSM review of the Lunar Models kit. He sums up everything about it that there is to say. www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/md_disc.htmI applaud his tenacity and drive. I will not be going to these lengths with this kit. I will build it as is to see how it turns out.. I didn't try the hair dryer trick on the CM. What I did do was to run it under warm water. Nothing. Then hot water. Still nothing. I then dropped it into a pot of boiling water for a full 12 minutes. Still I could not warp the CM into a sphereical shape! The heat had no effect! The CM was cast very thick and uneven on the inside -blockish. I will consider gouging out the excess and then heating it again. I expect that if the inside walls are a similar consistency, then it should be much easier to manipulate -and be far more delicate too! I will also likely carve out the center PBDoor as it has a load of crud molded into an edge (the kit comes with an extra door for perhaps this very reason(?)). I will also give strong consideration to slicing the bridge windows open.

the very first kit I got was Red Baron's-from John F Green, a pre-internet old kits list. This was a truly awful and fearfully expensive horror, but the only game in town in the 1980's.The CM was about 1/160 scale, the engine module was more like 1/80-like a rear perspective shot just measured as it was.It was made from a resin so sticky you could feel it decades later. It looked like styrofoam-maybe the guys who made it put the resin in the gadget used to degas the mold rubber rather than the pressure caster...

I still have them Discovery kit and have tried to see if this was a salvageable venture but alas, I must agree with previous owners. It's nice to think that you can get a decent build out of this but by the time you correct the gaps, the egg-shaped CM, etc. as others have thought they could do, you can probably scratch build one or save enough money to get one of George's (when it was available) or Scott's (when it finally goes into production). I will offer what was offered by Scott (Capt. Cardboard) and Smashmonkey. If anyone is interested in looking defeat in the face, I will pass this along to the next person to muse over.

I've still got those direction sheets here somewhere, Tag... I've been meaning to scan and send them along to you. it sounds like my delay has not hindered your plans though. you should consider keeping that engine block for a scratch build. that is certainly an excellent piece. The only one that can be said to be with this particular kit.

I sold the masters to culttv man over 2 years ago. With the news about the re-making of the thrusters I was told several months ago that he was getting the masters back for me to work on. So far nothing.

Add to the list the 'Stargazer models 1/144 scale Discovery kit ... This list is just for out of production discoveries, now in the graveyard. I hope yours continues strong for some time to come. But I'll add it if needed.
