Hi All,
EDIT: Seems Warner Music Group took a dislike to my Strauss soundtrack! I'm uploading it to Vimeo where it should be left alone!
Link will be added when available.
Now that its finished, I thought I'd come back and share with you my latest creation. Its a CGI version of the space journey from 2001.
I gathered a lot of info from this site as well as some source models (all rebuilt, just used as a rough guide). I've put a mention in the video and on the youtube page to here.
It's made in full HD but lower resolution versions are available.
Anyway, enjoy! Comments welcomed.

I like your CGI version of the movie. The computer allows more flexibility and fluid movement that wasn't available at the time.
Also I really would have like to see some scenes like the shuttle entering the space station hanger. I saw one picture that someone made with a Aries II moon shuttle already docked inside the hanger. This would explain how they got onto that ship.
More nice shots would be the Aires II leaving the space station as well as extra angles of it landing on the moon other than the classic side view. Maybe a quick shot of it descending into the interior from above also.
Other ideas are the moon bus leaving Calvius as well as more of the Discovery from different angles. Maybe you could even show it using the main engines to brake for Jupiter orbital insertion.

Thanks for the comments. I agree, I did want to do more of the other shots but initially, I wanted to be accurate to the film. No thats done I can look at the other areas like the aries, moon shuttle etc. Even considered the moon/monolith set as well. I have finally got the version online with the original music (darned warner music group!) at vimeo, over here:- www.vimeo.com/11574474It should make more sense now as things happen when they did in the movie with the music timed as it should be. If people want to make suggestions, it may be possible that we can turn this into a fan edit of 2001. with all the external shots as we wanted to see them (had we the tech back then!)

Outstanding work! The original orbiting bombs were just panned and zoomed still images... no change in perspective as in your video. Nice touch with the subtle roll on a couple of the satellites!
The other cool effect is the "hard" shadows that you would expect in space. Kubrick opted for soft shadows to show more of the detail.
When you get to the Discovery animations, please kill the "moving starfield" effect that Kubrick used to give the impression of motion.
Would be cool to see Aries leaving the space station.
Would love to see your cgi files uploaded to the ODEC site!

Ask and ye shall receive! Here are the space bomb objects in Lightwave 9 Format with textures. I've also included the famous bone! Feel free to put these up on the main site if you wish, they're not works of art by any stretch but they may help inspire someone the way the current set inspired me! Attachments:

Thanks for the files! Now if I can just find my LightWave dongle... If these are new models, I'll be happy to post them (credited to prefim) up on the main site ( www.2001-3d-archive.info). If they are conversions of the existing models, I can post the conversions. prefim, do you mind giving me your name, so I can credit you with these models?

Hi,
These are all fresh builds. They were based on the existing ones and the images in this forum. My names Mat Recardo.
I'm working on packaging up the station V. That was more of a cleanup as I kept some of the original geometry and remodelled the rest to add higher detail. Once thats done, I'll upload and it be credited back to Michael Powell for the original mesh.
