Amazon are now listing it for 27 November!! Beginning to wonder if it will ever see the light of day. Don't understand why it is constantly being postponed.

...Don't understand why it is constantly being postponed. Small publisher in England producing a book on an esoteric subject. Expect delays.

My god, it's full of stars.
This is the book I'd hoped the Taschen book would be. TONS of development sketches, with some behind the scenes photos. 90% of the content was new to me. As far as the design aspect of the 'future', this book puts all previous tomes on this subject to shame (not that they aren't nice). WOW!

I ordered the Lange book from Amazon a few weeks ago and was told to expect delivery in mid-December. The book just arrived a few minutes ago (Dec 19) and it is wonderful!!! I just started looking through it and I'm over the moon!
This book is soooo much better than the Taschen book. That book is a perfect example of how focusing on a book's design can get in the way of its readability and usefulness.
Not so with "The 2001 File". This book is a nice size (10 x 12 inches and ~1.5 inches thick). Most of the pictures are printed on one page with only a few spanning two pages. And for the ones that do span two pages there isn't any important information lost in the binding of the book - unlike the Taschen book. The paper used for the book is a matte finish and so some of the pictures are not as crisp as they would be on glossy paper. {This would be my only quibble with this book.) BOTOH, the matte finish means there is less glare on the pages and it really cuts down the weight of the book. And in truth, for most of the line drawings and sketches shown in this book the lack of glossy paper does not make much of a difference.
There are tons of pre-production drawings showing the evolution of the design concepts for the various spacecraft and other hardware. {This even includes sketches for various wheeled moonbus configurations as well as Clavius Base and the TMA-1 excavation site.} Basically, if something appeared in the movie then there are pre-production sketches of it in this book. There are numerous 'behind the scenes' pictures from the filming of the movie. Most of those pictures and sketches have never been published before - even in the Taschen book. There are also bits and pieces of early versions of the script showing what the production designers had to use as a starting place.
This book is an amazing look into the design of 2001:A Space Odyssey and is hands down the best book on the subject I've ever seen. You won't be disappointed by it.
