What is the best glue to attach styrene panels to the resin model?
I know Cyanoacrylate (super-glue) has low shearing strength.
Will the liquid glues (Methylene Chloride, or Methyl Ethyl Keytone) work with styrene to resin bonding?
What glue(s) did you use, ModelMan?

(original post: 02 Dec 2007 11:06 pm)I used to use std. Testors model cement. Never liked it much due to curing time, but didn't know of anything else. When I got my first resin kit, I looked around and defaulted to crazy glue, but only for resin. One day, I discovered that the local dollar store sells CA for ... wait for it! ... A DOLLAR ... Shocked I've used that exclusively for everything all the time. Never bothered experimenting with anything else (or switching back) as the dollar price tag, the vast utility of it and 'instant' setting time can't be beat.

(original posted: Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:02 am)I intended to use the CA for basic assembly, good surface gripping. The flat panels were my main concern. I guess they are not likely to get a lot of shear stress, the primer, putty, and paint should secure any edges. I am totally blown away by your local dollar store's pricing structure.

I am totally blown away by your local dollar store's pricing structure. I couldn't believe it either! ;D But to find the CA (regular and[ gel) was a godsend! I was paying near $3 a tube and hating it before fortune smiled. I pick up a dozen tubes at a time and am set for a couple months work. The gel version is a recent addition. Sometimes its Krazy Glue brand crazy glue, sometimes it's generic looking (but billed as 'the original crazy glue'). Either way, it's CA for a dollar... 99ยข to be exact. This avoids tax too!.

Dug around on the "tips" area of Starship Modeler, and ran across Vince Hoffmann's thoughts on the subject.
I have noticed the softening of styrene details on my resin kits. Neat solution.

And the paint surface makes it easier to pull the pieces apart down the road, should you need to!

I'm looking at casting a duplicate thruster "pyramid" for the front of the tower head. I have seen people use clay to make a temporary (one shot) mold. Anybody have any tips on this?

I've been debating this with myself all this year. I originally thought I could pile some putty on and shape away to get the RCS. However, that would lead to guaranteed asymmetry. My current thought is to take a 'block' of sculpy, mush it on the RCS for an impression, bake it solid, take some fresh scupy mush that into this new mold, pull that out, bake it, trim it and glue it on. It could work. Also to note is that sculpy hates enamels...

The sculpy thing crossed my mind too.
Maybe mush-mold the existing quad, bake it, then use for resin casting?
Wonder if Mad Dog would pop a couple off for us?

I was going to go w/ a sculpy part as I have plenty about. I've also never worked with resin yet. Give Charlie a shout and ask. It'd be kind a funny if he started offering accuratizations kits for his kit.

Nice.
Oh, any good sources for American flag decals? Also, what is the star in the circle, with bars, called?
