Tix just went on sale! $5 each! www.oscars.org/events/index.htmlIf anyone is coming to Los Angeles, I have an extra mattress, couch and floor space if needed. (All highlighting by me...) The Academy's celebration of the 40th anniversary of 2001: A Space Odyssey continues with a special "behind the scenes" evening hosted by Douglas Trumbull and Tom Hanks. "2001 in 2008: A Cinematic Odyssey" will feature never-before-seen images and clips from the making of Stanley Kubrick's Academy Award®-winning science fiction masterpiece. Although Kubrick was somewhat secretive regarding the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Kubrick Archives were recently donated to the University of the Arts in London, and David D. Larson, who has been researching a book on the film's history for the last eight years, gained unprecedented access to the collection. Trumbull aided Larson by identifying and contextualizing many items from the trove of original artwork, memos, call sheets, photographs and other artifacts; highlights of these discoveries will be included in "2001 in 2008." Complementing the presentation will be a lobby display of actual items used in the film, including a spacesuit, helmets and set elements, all on loan from private collections.

I'll be at this event. FYI - it's completely sold out.
Also, the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica will be screening 2001 in 70mm on Friday 5/23. I'll be setting up a lobby display of photos - many of which are one of a kind behind the scenes photos Doug Trumbull loaned me. You can't bring cameras in, but I can assure you, you won't be disappointed. 2001 in 70mm on the big screen and a nice 'making of' presentation to boot.

This is a paste from the Atomic city site. ----------------------------------------------------- It's coming up on midnight so I won't say much now.
The highlight for me was talking to Trumbull and Dave Larson afterwards.
I questioned them on plans to restore the 70mm print. The overall answer is that they really want to.
In a vault, somewhere out there, there may very well be a very special set of negatives. When SK shot this, he did what's called color separations of the master footage. So just like your printer, there is a yellow, cyan and magenta master negative. IF they can find it, if they can get the money together it will be done. I passed along my card in hopes that they may still have it when this happens and get me involved (a dream to be sure).
If these negs exist, they have the 19 mins that SK cut after the first few showings (including the painting lesson on the SS, Poole's eva, more dawn of man, more stargate and so on... That is all silent footage and would be put as a dvd bonus (bluray, whatever)
Highlights: Buzz Aldrin returned for the evening, Anya Kubrick was on hand, Barry Lyndon's 'son' attended her, Moonwatcher and Cut Ear (the murder victim) were there along with the elevator stewardess;
they didn't show the film, Doug gave a 2hr presentation; Hanks rehashed a few jokes and talked far too much this time;
sooo many stills and bts shots of crew at work, prelim designs and tests for the discovery, the moonbus, the monolith at jupiter, (they couldn't figure out how to do saturn at the time, so they went w/ Jupiter),
working mockups of the centrifuge, sets under construction, storyboards, compositing mockups and temp tests (the pod was going to be int he stargate sequence as an over-the-shoulder shot but was cut to just the stargate, ideas for the aliens that never made an appearance,
props included a couple of the six helmets made, the blue jumpsuit, one of the camrea's, the fish eye that shot Hal's POV (MASSIVE lens), some nice stills, the booklet you got attending the film, umm, Scott's Little D.
And making an appearance, the one and only, Scott Alexander -who at this point is almost an hour into his 3hr drive home.
Info overload. I'll scan the one sheet that they handed out in a min and post it here.
Did I say 'wow'? I know I did, so let me say it again.
WOW!
ps, Doug wants to do this presentatin in London sometime so Mr.s Kubrick can be in attendance.
pps. I didn't get my cam in. The audio would have come out very poorly and I wouldn't have been able to hold it throught he presentation. A few people snapped shots of the props downstairs, but were told to stop. They continued anyway.
ppps wish I could say more. I'm burnt!

I'll echo those sentiments - wow. I've worked with Dave on a bunch of presentations, but this was THE one.
I did manage smuggle a camera in. Crappy cel phone camera, but I got some shots of the crowd and a few of the artifacts.
Someone send me a mail at GKvfx at gmail.com and I'll pass them along for posting here......
